The Winelands of South Africa

wine valley outside Stellenbosch
About an hour from Cape Town is the area of vineyards and wineries known as the Winelands, a beautiful area of deep wine valleys surrounded by high mountains.  Stellenbosch is the best known town in the region, but we stayed in Franschhoek, a small town about 15 minutes away, with several wonderful B & B's and restaurants.

We stayed at The Last Word, a wonderful bed and breakfast inn.  Remarkably, it had been completely flooded in February, 2014--and we were there in late April, 2014, only 2 weeks after they had reopened.  In that interim, they had dug out 4 feet of mud from the entire property, repaired roads, gutted the bedrooms and public spaces and replaced everything from beds to curtains to bathrooms.  Quite a feat, with beautiful results, despite the catastrophic flood.  When we returned from a wine tasting dinner, there were 2 tiny and delicious dishes of creme brulee on our pillows.  Yum!

A friend had arranged lunch for the three of us the day we arrived at the Postcard Cafe, located in a winery.  It is, indeed, a postcard given its lovely setting.  Well worth a visit, but you do need to make reservations well in advance.
